People often ask me why I run... or they say they could never run for 3+ miles just for fun. Sometimes I feel I need to justify my reasons for running.
There are a ton of advantages to running:
running is free if you run in your neighborhood
running is great cardio
it burns calories
it helps you lose weight and tone
people notice when you work out
they compliment you
your clothes fit better
you sleep better
.........
Yes, a ton of advantages. But the real reason for me is progress:
A few months ago, a friend began training me for a half marathon (which is coming up in April... yikes!). I couldn't even dream of running more than a quarter of a mile. So, we began with the Couch to 5K (C25K) program and completed it. It starts with 30 minutes of intervals walking and running. Each week the walking decreases and the running increases. By the end of it, I was running 3 miles straight with no walking. PROGRESS!
After that, we would increase a mile every week or so... still including some walking. I can now run about 5 miles no walking, as long as my breath holds up. With intervals of walking and running, I have gone as much as 8 miles!! PROGRESS!
THAT is why I run. PROGRESS. I challenge myself every time I hit the pavement. I want to be better. Better than myself. Not better than someone else. I LOVE competing...... against myself. It's different from making progress in school or at work. It's a physical competition to see if I can be better than I was last time.
